New Year Resolutions [How-to]
I’m writing this on the eve of New Year 2015, and this is the time we do this thing called “taking new year resolutions”. I’m sure everyone is aware of what this is. I’m probably not the best person to be writing about this as I’m very bad at planning and setting goals(See why). IMO, I think this is stupid because we can set goals and resolutions at any time we want to. But new years are a special time for people, it’s like a fresh start. People want the next year to be a better one so they plan it out, take some resolutions, and work on it.
There are people who can easily stick to those goals and resolutions. There are also some who can’t or find it hard. I thought this is the perfect time to write some points on how to take proper new year resolutions. This is completely opinionated. I’ve just gathered some points from the internet which seem to work for ‘most’ people.
#1. Go traditional
Instead of using your smartphones or tablets, use a diary or a writing pad. Something small enough to put it in your pocket. Few people are comfortable and genuinely use their smartphones or To-Do apps. But for others, try to use a writing pad or some notepad. Finish off day to day tasks and strike them out. Keep seeing the pad from time to time. Set your priorities straight. Finish your tasks from the highest priority to the lowest priority.
#2. Set small and realistic Goals
Some people get disappointed by setting really big goals. This is a big no-no. For those who can manage setting big goals, you may ignore this. For example, instead of setting a goal like “I will get 6 pack abs in 4 months”, set a goal like “I will go the gym everyday”. Or instead of setting a goal like “I will learn to play a song from Metallica in 2 weeks”, set a goal like “I’ll practice the guitar everyday”. These are very much doable goals. Instead of getting disappointed over a long-term goal, get motivated by finishing the small goals which will make you more productive.
#3. Keep it to yourself
This can work in both ways. If you’re going to share your resolutions with your mates, you will be in a situation where you’ll be forced to achieve it. This is good. In most cases, it doesn’t work that way. The pressure will get to you and you’ll eventually give up. So keep your plans to yourself and get shit done.
If you do something everyday for a long time, it becomes a habit. Be it a good one or a bad one. ‘You love reading ? Do you read everyday ? I’m pretty sure not a day goes by where you don’t read’. So try to make a habit of what you’re trying to do. If you want to follow a weight loss program, do it everyday. Exercise, diet or whatever it is, do it everyday. Eventually, exercising would be a part of your daily routine. Just like brushing your teeth, if you brush everyday that is.
#5. Time management (Oh no!)
I’m probably the worst person to be writing about this. Yes you read it right. Moving on. Learn to manage time properly. Give each task a time and finish it within that given time. If you don’t, move on unless it’s a high priority task. Always wear your watch so that you can keep track of the time. Again, prioritize your tasks and set enough time to finish that task. Also, don’t forget to take breaks and don’t over do it.
That’s it for now. Five short points on making your new year resolutions actually work. I should tell you this. I’ve never followed the above points as I mentioned above. Every person works in a different way. Anyhow, I’ve put some points that has helped most people to make their resolutions work.
Happy New Year!
